Dirty Cupholder

Ever look down while driving your car and see how filthy and nasty the cup holder might be?  Let me say from years of experience, I have witnessed and cleaned some downright gross cup holders.  It’s amazing what can be spilled in a cup holder.  Coffee, soda pop, milkshakes, etc.  To make things worse is when people don’t clean up the mess, at all, causing the cup holder to attract dust, dirt, grime, and germs.  The photo below shows a dirty cup holder from a 2007 Acura TL while detailing in Dublin Ohio.  Keep in mind, this is not an extremely dirty cup holder.  This is just one that I had this morning so I wanted to use it as an example for this blog post.  I have certainly cleaned way worse than this one.

Car Cupholder Being Cleaned

The photo above shows me spraying some Meguiar’s All Purpose Cleaner diluted 10:1.  After letting it sit in the cup holder for about ten minutes, I used a microfiber towel to wipe out the cup holder the best I could.  I believe this eliminated about 75 percent of the sticky grime.  Sometimes it’s a little difficult to get all the grime, especially around the deep edges of the cupholder.  Now, it was time to use the vapor steamer.  I did not include a photo of the steam cleaning of the cup holder because I couldn’t hold the camera, cup holder, and steamer all at once.

The entire process took no more than ten minutes.  I let the cleaner sit in the cup holder for about ten minutes and that is what took the most time.  While the cleaner did its job, I detailed other areas of the car.  This proves that with the right products and a (tiny) bit of effort, cleaning a car cup holder may not be as nasty as it originally looked.
