How to remove stains from a car seat
Customers frequently contact us asking whether stains can be removed from the upholstery or carpeting in their vehicle. The answer is usually yes, but it depends on several factors such as how long the stain has been there, what caused it, and how deeply it has soaked into the fabric. Some stains come out almost instantly, while others can be more stubborn and require multiple cleaning passes.
At Auto Detail Doctor, we typically use a three-step process to remove stains from cloth car seats. The method involves shampooing the upholstery, agitating the fibers with high-temperature steam, and then performing hot water extraction. When done properly, this process can dramatically improve the appearance of stained seats and remove contamination that normal cleaning cannot reach.
The vehicle shown in the photos is a Hyundai Elantra. If you’ve ever owned one, you may already know that the cloth seats in these cars tend to stain very easily. Even small spills or water marks can leave visible spots. In this particular case, it looked like the owner had spilled water, soda, coffee, and possibly other drinks on the seat over time. Situations like this are extremely common and are exactly the type of problem interior detailing is designed to solve.
Why Car Seats Stain So Easily
Automotive cloth upholstery is designed to be comfortable and breathable, but that also means it can absorb liquids quickly. When something is spilled, the moisture often travels below the surface fabric and into the foam underneath the seat cover. Once that happens, wiping the surface usually doesn’t remove the stain.
Over time, additional contamination can build up inside the fibers. Dirt, oils from clothing, food residue, and dust all contribute to seats looking dull or discolored. Even plain water can leave a stain if minerals are left behind when it dries.
That’s why professional upholstery cleaning focuses on removing contamination from deep inside the seat rather than just cleaning the surface.
One of our most popular products is Extractor Soap. It is a low-foaming, high pH carpet and upholstery shampoo that effectively breaks down embedded dirt, grease, and grime on seats. We begin by vacuuming the affected area of the seat and then spray the upholstery shampoo on the surface. After letting it sit for about three to four minutes, we use a utility scrub brush to ensure the shampoo reaches deep within the upholstery fibers. Step 1: Vacuuming and Applying Upholstery Shampoo
The first step in removing stains is thoroughly vacuuming the seat. This removes loose dirt and debris so it doesn’t interfere with the cleaning process.
After vacuuming, we apply a professional upholstery shampoo to the affected areas. One of our most frequently used products is Extractor Soap. It’s a low-foaming, high-pH carpet and upholstery cleaner that works very well for breaking down grease, dirt, and organic stains embedded in automotive fabrics.
The shampoo is sprayed evenly across the stained area and allowed to dwell for several minutes. This gives the cleaner time to begin dissolving the contamination within the fibers.
In our experience, letting the product sit for about three to four minutes produces the best results. After the dwell time, we use a utility scrub brush to gently work the shampoo deeper into the upholstery. This agitation helps loosen stains that have bonded to the fabric.
Unlike some cleaners, this product does not leave the upholstery stiff or crunchy once it dries. That’s important because nobody wants their seats to feel rough after cleaning.
Step 2: Steam Agitation
Once the cleaning solution has had time to break down the contamination, the next step is steam agitation.
We use a professional vapor steamer equipped with a triangular brush head that contains medium-coarse bristles. Steam is released through the brush as we scrub the surface of the seat. The heat helps dissolve sticky residues while the brushing motion lifts dirt toward the surface.
High-temperature steam is extremely effective for interior detailing because it penetrates the fabric without soaking it. It also helps sanitize the upholstery and remove odors that can develop over time.
As we agitate the seat, you can often see the stains beginning to loosen. In many cases, about ninety percent of the contamination is lifted toward the top of the fabric during this stage, which makes the final extraction step much more effective.
Step 3: Hot Water Extraction
After shampooing and steam agitation, we move on to hot water extraction.
For this process we use a Mytee HP60 Heated Extractor. This professional machine heats water to around 210 degrees, injects it into the upholstery, and immediately vacuums it back out into a recovery tank. The tool uses a powerful three-stage vacuum motor along with a 1,200-watt heater and a 120-psi water pump.
This step is where the real transformation happens.
The hot water flushes out dissolved dirt, cleaning solution, and contaminants from deep within the seat fibers. The strong vacuum then pulls the dirty water out of the upholstery so it doesn’t remain trapped inside.
When performing extraction, we often start in the middle of the seat so customers can clearly see the difference between the cleaned area and the untouched portions. The contrast can be dramatic, especially when the seats have heavy staining.
The Results
After several careful passes with the extractor, the improvement becomes very obvious. Comparing the first photo with the final image shows how much cleaner the seat looks after the shampoo, steam agitation, and extraction process.
While some extremely old or deeply set stains may not disappear completely, most seats improve significantly with this method. Removing the dirt and residue also helps eliminate odors and leaves the interior looking fresher.
Once cleaning is complete, the seat will need a short amount of time to dry. The fabric is not soaking wet, but it will be slightly damp from the extraction process. In most cases the seat dries within an hour depending on the weather and airflow.

What Types of Stains Can Be Removed?

Older stains can still improve, but they sometimes require more effort or multiple cleaning passes.
