Many older wheel cleaners were acid-based. While effective, acids can be risky on certain finishes and can cause etching if used improperly. Non-acid formulas provide strong cleaning ability while being safer when used correctly.
Despite being non-acidic, D143 has impressive cleaning power when paired with proper technique.
The Wheel Cleaning Process
The process itself is straightforward, but technique matters.
First, we sprayed the cleaner generously onto the dry wheel surface. Allowing the product to dwell for about a minute gives it time to break down contamination. Dwell time is critical—rinsing too quickly reduces effectiveness.
After allowing the cleaner to work, we used a pressure washer to thoroughly rinse the wheel. In many cases, you can visibly see layers of brake dust lifting and washing away.
For heavier contamination, agitation with a wheel brush can further loosen embedded particles, especially in tight areas around lug nuts and spokes.
Once rinsed, we dried the wheel with a clean microfiber towel. To finish, we used a quick detail spray to remove any light remaining residue and enhance the gloss of the finish.
The entire process takes only a couple of minutes per wheel when done properly, but the visual transformation can be dramatic.

The difference between the before and after condition of these wheels was significant. Years of baked-on brake dust were removed, restoring clarity and brightness to the finish.
